Cardinals Triumph at Trine Invitational

ANGOLA, Ind. (Nov. 11, 2017) – The North Central College wrestling team put on an impressive display of talent at the Trine University Invitational on Saturday, tallying three first place individual finishes that led to a team victory in the end.
 
The Cardinals won the meet with 119.5 points with the help of strong performances across the board and 18 wrestlers contributing to the team's score. Baldwin-Wallace University was the meet's runner up with 96 points, followed by Olivet College with 86 points.
 
Anthony Rink started his day with two wins by technical fall at 141 pounds, defeating Emmanuel Rankine of Adrian College 16-1 and Zeke Breuninger from Muskegon Community College 15-0.
 
Rink would go on to win the quarterfinal match against Tanner McHugh from Baldwin Wallace by a 7-5 decision. His winning streak continued into the semifinals, securing a 9-7 decision over Brandon Ladd from Alma College and a spot in the first place match. Rink ended the evening as the champion, winning the first place match with a 13-3 major decision over Ethan May of Olivet.
 
Receiving a bye in the first round, Ben Williamson, entering the competition ranked ninth in the preseason polls, began his evening at 149 with a win by fall over Baldwin Wallace's Ryan Orr early in the second round. He secured a second win in the quarterfinals with a 11-1 major decision over Easton Maus from Olivet.
 
Williamson made easy work of Noah Nieman from Adrian College in the semifinal match, winning 9-0 by major decision and went on to win the championship match by a 17-4 major decision over Michael Carpenter from Baldwin Wallace.
 
Tyler Vittal also began the meet with a bye at 197 before securing his first win of the day by decision over Quinton Mincy from the University of Chicago in the quarterfinal match. Vittal went on to win by tech. fall 19-3 over Raden Holmes from Olivet in the semifinals.
 
Advancing to the championship match, Vittal earned an 8-2 win by decision over Anthony Neal of host Trine to claim another first place finish for North Central.
 
The Cardinals had six wrestlers win their respective third place matches to help the team score the win. Marc Fleenor placed third at the 133-weight class, defeating Cam Fender of Indiana Tech. University by major decision.

Matt Marcotte secured a win for third place at the 174-weight class, defeating Haydn Kinjorski of Olivet by decision, 9-5.  At the 285, Audel Ochoa defeated Will Hare of the University of Chicago in the third place match with a pin 49 seconds into the first round.
 
Egan Berta, Cameron Hayes, and Josh Bouie each won their third-place matches by forfeit in the 157, 165, and 184 weight classes, respectively, contributing 25.5 combined points to the team score.
 
Williamson lead the Cardinals to victory with 19 points, followed by Rink with 18 and Ochoa with 16.50. Vittal put up 14.50 points and Marcotte contributed 12 points while Fleenor added nine.
 
North Central (1-0) hosts No. 12 Augustana College for its first College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) dual of the season on Wednesday, Nov. 15 inside Gregory Arena. Matches are set to begin at 7 P.M and live coverage can be found HERE.
