Feb. 20, 2016 - The North Central College women's track and field team closed the indoor regular season with a flourish on Friday, securing five first-place finishes and placing second out of eight teams in the Cardinal Classic at Al B. Carius Track.
The Cardinals totaled 171 points, trailing only Lewis University's score of 215.50. Wheaton College finished third with 82.50.
One of several season-best efforts for North Central came from Madison Renfro, who won the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.85 seconds. Renfro finished her preliminary heat in 8.84, the fourth-fastest time by a NCAA Division III competitor this season. The Cardinals also got a national-caliber effort in the distance medley relay, as Tori Capozziello, Priscilla Colon, Allison Hartman and Megan Costanzo finished first in 12 minutes, 3.84 seconds to post the fifth-fastest time in North Central history and the eighth-fastest time in Division III this season.
North Central collected 1-2 finishes in two events. Courtney Meyer and Alexis Nelson finished first (11 feet, 6 1/2 inches) and second (11'0 3/4"), respectively, in the pole vault, while Kayla Etherton and Naomi Yamane placed first (50'10") and second (46'0 3/4") in the 20-pound weight throw. Yamane added a runner-up finish in the shot put (40'3 1/4"). Helen Majer added the Cardinals' final event victory of the evening, winning the 3,000-meter run in 10:46.28.
Colon also finished third in the 400-meter dash (1:01.95), as did Kelsey Kirk in the high jump (5'3") and Jessica Sutfin in the 60-meter hurdles (9.73).
The Cardinals host the CCIW Indoor Championships Friday and Saturday, with competition scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. both days. More information can be found at cciw.org.
