NORMAL, Ill. (Oct. 29, 2016) - The North Central College women's cross country team secured a second-place finish in its first meet of the 2016 championship season on Saturday, placing three runners in the top 20 at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Championships at Maxwell Park.

North Central finished with 73 points in the meet, behind only Wheaton College, which put five finishers in the top 10 to win with a total of 43. Illinois Wesleyan University finished third (86), followed by Carroll University (99), Carthage College (107), Augustana College (120), Elmhurst College (201), North Park University (218) and Millikin University (251).

Elmhurst's Alaina Nebel won the CCIW's individual championship and claimed Athlete of the Year accolades, completing the 6,000-meter (3.7-mile) course in 22 minutes, 41.2 seconds. Amanda Cortese led the Cardinals with a second-place showing in 23:35.8, while Helen Majer placed eighth in 24:15.2 and Tori Capozziello finished 18th in 24:45.6. Cortese and Majer received First Team All-CCIW honors, while Capozziello earned Second Team All-CCIW accolades.

North Central's scoring was rounded out by Hailey Dammeier and Yazmin Nunez, who finished 22nd (25:02.8) and 23rd (25:05.6), respectively.

The Cardinals host their annual Red/White Invitational at St. James Farm in Warrenville on Thursday before traveling to Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winnecone, Wisconsin for the NCAA Division III Midwest Region Championship on Saturday, Nov. 12.
