WINNECONE, Wis. (Oct. 17, 2015) - Competing against a field stacked with nationally-ranked opposition, the North Central College women's cross country was able to hold its own in the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh AAE Invitational on Saturday, placing 12th in a 46-team field at Lake Breeze Golf Course.
The Cardinals, who dropped out of the national rankings two weeks ago, finished ahead of two of the 12 ranked teams in attendance with a total of 391 points. Fifth-ranked Washington University in St. Louis won the team title with 136 points, followed by 14th-ranked Willamette University (Oregon) with 165, the 13th-ranked University of Chicago with 201, 10th-ranked Hope College (Michigan) with 259 and 27th-ranked Emory University (Georgia) with 265.
Megan Kellogg of St. Lawrence University (New York) emerged with a strong final kilometer to win the 6,000-meter race by five seconds in a time of 21 minutes, 11.70 seconds, and lead a field of 404 total finishers. The Cardinals' top finisher was Megan Costanzo, who placed 12th overall in 21:39.86.
Amanda Cortese came in 37th (22:22.33) for North Central, while Rebecca Kaefring finished 84th (22:52.99), Helen Majer placed 103rd (23:04.09) and Amy Rotunno placed 169th (23:36.74) to complete the Cardinals' scoring.
North Central is idle until Saturday, Oct. 31, when it travels to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside to compete in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Championships. The Cardinals will be looking to defend the CCIW title they won last season.
