Jan. 20, 2012-- The North Central College men's track & field squad ran over the four team field to claim the team title in the NCC Cardinal Opener inside the Al B. Carius Track & Field Facility on Friday, winning 11 of the 16 events scored.
The Cardinals, ranked no. 1 in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association preseason poll, raked up 347 total points with runner-up University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh scoring 125 points. Benedictine University and Emory University rounded out the competition tallying 51 points and 40 points, respectively.
John Wood cleared 16 1/2' in the pole vault while teammate
Zach Heerspink won the high jump, leaping 6' 4".
The Cardinals dominated the day on the track as
Josh Mitchell claimed the 60-meter dash in a time of 7.26. Joseph Michaels won the 200-meter dash in a time of 23.21,
Dan Benton won the 400-meter dash in 49.20, and Patrick Foley claimed the 800-meter run, finishing with a time of 1:27.61.
Juliano Lodi blazed the competition in the mile run with a time of 4:29.08. Nicholas Galanes raced through the 60-meter hurdles, placing first with a time of 8.43.
In the relays, North Central cruised to victory in the 4x400-meter relay as Benton,
Randal Ellison,
Dionte Hackler, and Jon Caron finished the race in 3:21.96 while teammates
Jacob Paulus,
Spiros Angelakos,
Daniel Hannapel, and
Matthew Havey winning the distance medley in a time of 10:53.80.
The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 28 as they host the NCC Quadrangular at the Al B. Carius Track, with the first event slated for 11 am.
