CLAREMONT, Calif. (May 27, 2011)-- North Central College's
Sam Sweeney rolled to his 14th-straight singles victory in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Singles Tournament on Friday before seeing his streak and season come to a close in the second round in southern California.
Sweeney, the Central Region's top ranked singles player, began the day by downing Mary Washington University's (Va.) Kaz Murata (12-10), who entered the match ranked fifth within the Atlantic South Region. The senior tallied the final three games en route to a 6-1 victory in the opening set before overcoming a slow start in the second set against the Eagles' No. 1 man, rallying from a 3-1 hole to pull out the 6-4 victory and advance to the round of 16 for the season straight season.
In the round of 16, Sweeney battled against the Northeast Region's fifth-ranked player in Andrew Guzick (27-1) of Vassar College (N.Y.) but was unable to keep pace with the Brewers' top man, falling, 6-4, 7-5, to conclude his season. The loss snapped a 14-match win streak for the senior that spanned all the way back to October 2010.
Sweeney closes the season with a 21-2 mark in singles play, winning the ITA Central Region Championship in the fall and placing fifth at the ITA Small College National Championships. During the spring season, Sweeney captured his third straight College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin title in No. 1 singles and doubles to earn CCIW Player of the Year honors.
