Apr. 6, 2011-- Finishing the week unbeaten in singles with a pair of wins over regionally ranked opponents, North Central College's
Sam Sweeney has been selected as the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Men's Tennis Player of the Week.
Sweeney, ranked fifth nationally and No. 1 within the Central Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, began the week with a decisive, 6-2, 6-1, victory over Andy McGashen of University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on April 1. McGashen came into the match ranked 16th in the region. The senior continued to roll the following day, downing 12th-ranked Chris Kuna of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, 6-2, 6-2, before downing Augustana College's Adam DeSimone, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Matt Boguslawski suffered a 9-8 (7-0) setback to seventh-ranked Mitch Osborne and Byron Balkin of UW-Whitewater before taking down UWEC's 13th-ranked tandem of Kuna and Lars Olson, 9-7. The duo closed the week with an 8-5 victory over Augustana's DeSimone and Andy Wall.
Sweeney has now claimed five CCIW Player of the Week awards in his career, earning the honor twice in 2009 (Feb. 17 and April 28) and twice in 2010 (Mar. 17 and Mar. 31).
North Central returns to the courts on Friday, facing CCIW rival Carthage College at 3:30 p.m. in Kenosha, Wis.
