Apr. 13, 2011-- North Central College's
Sam Sweeney continued his stellar play last week, compiling a 2-0 record in singles and a 1-1 mark in doubles en route to his second straight College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Men's Tennis Player of the Week honor.
The senior collected a pair of singles victories over regionally ranked opponents, beginning with a, 6-4, 6-2, victory over No. 19 Jeff Lotz of Carthage College on Friday. His win helped the Cardinals secure a 5-4 upset victory over the 17th-ranked and defending conference champion Red Men. Sweeney followed that performance by downing ninth-ranked Will Zhang of the nationally-ranked University of Chicago, winning by a, 6-2, 6-3, count.
Sweeney, ranked fifth nationally and No. 1 within the Central Region, is 15-1 on the season, having won eight straight matches while posting a 7-1 mark against ranked opponents.
In doubles, Sweeney and his partner
Matt Boguslawski downed Carthage's Matt Whiteside and Nick Boomgarden, 8-3, on Friday before suffering a 8-5 setback to the Maroon's No. 1 tandem of Alex Golovin and Jan Stefanski. The duo is currently 8-3 on the season and 3-0 in CCIW play.
This is the second CCIW Player of the Week award for Sweeney this season and the sixth in his career. Sweeney additionally claimed the award on April 6 while earning the honor twice in 2009 (Feb. 17 and April 28) and twice in 2010 (Mar. 17 and Mar. 31).
The Cardinals (6-8, 2-1 CCIW), winners of three of their last four, return to action on Sunday for a non-conference showdown with Lake Forest College (Ill.) at the NCC Tennis Courts at 3 p.m.
