Men's Tennis Lands Two in Final ITA Rankings

June 10, 2010-- Two North Central College men's tennis players earned a spot in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region Rankings of the season on Thursday. Sam Sweeney closes the year as the region's third ranked singles player while Sweeney and Matt Boguslawski earn a No. 16 ranking in doubles.

Sweeney (19-4) closes out a banner year ranked third in singles play after compiling a 19-4 mark playing at the No. 1 position. The junior became the first Cardinal in school history to qualify for the NCAA Division III Championship, earning one of 32 bids to the singles tournament. Sweeney took down Washington & Lee University's Hayden White, 6-3, 6-4, in the opening round before falling to Middlebury College's Andy Peters, 6-2, 6-3, in the round of 16. Three of his four losses came at the hands of regionally ranked foes, compiling a 4-3 mark against ranked players.

Boguslawski and Sweeney (18-3) end the season ranked 16th regionally after closing out the season with a seven-match win streak. The duo won nine of their final 10 matches and was unbeaten against unranked opposition on the season.

North Central finished the 2010 season with a 7-15 overall record and a 2-3 mark in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play before placing fourth at the CCIW Tournament.
