JOLIET, Ill. (Apr. 14, 2010) -
Behind a first-place effort from junior Nick Guido, the North Central College men's golf team came within two strokes of its best 18-hole round of the spring on Tuesday, placing seventh in the University of St. Francis Spring Invitational at Wedgewood Golf Course.

The Cardinals finished with a score of 311, nearly matching the 309 posted at the Augustana College Invitational on Friday. North Central was five strokes shy of matching College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin rival Carthage College for third place in the 16-team field. Olivet Nazarene University won the event with a total of 297, six strokes better than the host Fighting Saints.

Leading the way for North Central was Guido, who matched his low round of the spring with an even-par 72. He finished his round in a three-way tie for medalist honors with Nac Huachai of Ashford University (Iowa) and Grant Whybark of St. Francis, claiming first place in a playoff.

Matt Grennell finished 21st with a five over-par 77, while Steven Panek shot 80 to place 37th and Brendan Chaves and Joshua Brantner each tied for 50th with identical scores of 82. Grennell also matched his best round of the spring season.

North Central will travel to Decatur, Ill., for the first two round of the CCIW Championships at the Country Club of Decatur. Play will begin at 9 a.m. both days.
