Mar. 4, 2010-- The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association released its seventh installment of the NCAA Division III National Team Rankings on Thursday with North Central College ranking third for the fourth consecutive week.
The Cardinals accumulated 139.38 points in this week's poll, trailing only top-ranked University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (152.26 points) and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (147.78 points). The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse jumps up one spot to fourth with 101.62 while the State University of New York-Geneseo rounds out the top five with 87.81 points. Carthage College is the only other College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin institution in the rankings, sitting 25th with 30.57 points.
This is the first year that the USTFCCCA has utilized its new formula for compiling rankings, which utilizes the NCAA Division III Indoor National performance list and assigns points to up to 30 athletes in each event. The purpose of the rankings is to create an index that showcases the teams that have the best potential of excelling at the national championships.
North Central won its 10th consecutive CCIW Indoor crown on Saturday, winning 10 of the 17 events contested.
Robert Kapustka led the way, winning both the 35-pound weight throw and the shot put, earning CCIW Men's Field Athlete of the Meet accolades for his performance.
Kyle Brady was selected as the CCIW Co-Track Athlete of the Meet after winning the 3,000-meter run and placing second in the 5,000-meters while
Al Carius and his staff was honored as the CCIW Coaching Staff of the Year.
The Cardinals travel to Stevens Point, Wis. on Saturday, competing at the Pointer Last Chance Meet where they will have one final opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships.
