CCIW Release
Mar. 17, 2010-- After recording a pair of wins over Division I opponents and finishing the weekend unbeaten in both singles and doubles play, North Central College's
Sam Sweeney has been honored as the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Men's Tennis Player of the Week.
Playing at the No. 1 singles position, Sweeney opened up Saturday with a decisive, 6-1, 6-0, victory over Milwaukee School of Engineering's Dustin Holzhauer before taking down Division I Western Illinois University's Jeff Cote, 6-2, 6-4, in the evening.
In doubles, Sweeney and his partner
Matt Boguslawski remained perfect on the season, smashing MSOE's Juan Diego Montenegro and Zach Weaver, 8-1, before claiming an 8-6 victory over the Leatherneck's tandem of Francisco Ortiz and James McGuire.
Sweeney, ranked 12th in the Central Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, is 3-1 in singles matches this season and a perfect 4-0 in doubles.
This is the first time this season and third time in his career that Sweeney has claimed the award. The junior was the CCIW Player of the Week on Feb. 17, 2009 and again on Apr. 28, 2009, en route to winning CCIW Player of the Year accolades.
The Cardinals (1-3) return to the courts on Saturday, Mar. 20, facing the College of Staten Island at 3:30 p.m. in the first of six matches taking place during spring break in Orlando, Fla.
