Feb. 27, 2010 - The North Central College men's track and field team extended its unbeaten string in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Indoor Championship meets into double digits Friday and Saturday, winning its 10th consecutive indoor team title while hosting the event for the first time at Al B. Carius Track.
The third-ranked Cardinals won 10 of the 17 events and claimed five meet records in totaling 236.5 points. Augustana College placed second with 151.5 points, while 23rd-ranked Carthage College was third (131.5).
Illinois Wesleyan University placed fourth (52.5), followed by Wheaton College (51), Millikin University (25), Elmhurst College (10) and North Park University (4).
Two of North Central's victories came from
Robert Kapustka, who swept the throwing events. He won the 35-pound weight throw, improving his provisional qualifying mark for the indoor national championships and setting new school and CCIW records with a distance of 59 feet, 4 1/4 inches, then prevailed in the shot put with a distance of 50'8 1/4". Kapustka was named the CCIW Men's Field Athlete of the Meet for his efforts.
Jacob Austin also had a hand in two first-place finishes, both of which resulted in CCIW records. He teamed with
Alexander Knobloch,
Jonathan Caron and
Ryan Carrigan to win the distance medley relay in 10:09.53 and provisionally qualify for the national championships. Austin then won the 800-meter run in 1:53.79, improving his provisional qualifying mark.
Matthew Borchardt established a new CCIW record by winning the pentathlon with 3,641 points, while
Joe Schneiderbauer placed second (3,558). Both individuals improved their provisional qualifying marks for the national championships.
Jake Winder gave the Cardinals a fifth CCIW record in the pole vault by clearing 17'4 1/2". North Central swept the top five spots in the competition, as
Thomas Stacey placed second (16'4 3/4"),
John Wood placed third (16'1 3/4"),
Peter Geraghty finished fourth (16'1 3/4") and
Steven Stack was fifth (15'3 3/4").
The Cardinals swept the top four positions in the 5,000-meter run, as
Christopher Kane used a strong finish to secure the championship in 14:55.03.
Kyle Brady followed in second place (14:55.25), while
Michael Spain was third (14:56.46) and
Sean Carlson finished fourth (15:00.48). Brady later won the 3,000-meter run in 8:26.24 and was voted the CCIW's Co-Track Athlete of the Meet.
Daniel Benton won the 400-meter dash in 49.15 seconds, improving his provisional qualifying mark for the national championships, while Zachariah Heerspink and Borchardt went 1-2 in the high jump, each clearing 6'4 3/4".
The North Central coaching staff was voted the CCIW's Coaching Staff of the Year by the conference's head coaches.
The Cardinals will have one final chance to solidify their qualifying marks in the national championships on Saturday, when they travel to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Pointer Last Chance Qualifier.
