Jan. 29, 2010-- The North Central College men's track and field team won 12 of 17 events and registered six national qualifiers, winning the NCC Triangular at the Al B. Carius Track, Friday evening. The win was the Cardinals' third straight this indoor season, remaining unbeaten at their new home facility.
North Central scored 152 points in the team tally, edging out runner-up University of Wisconsin-Whitewater by a 47-point margin while Loras College (Iowa) was a distant third with 45 points.
Jake Winder punched his ticket to the NCAA Division III indoor championships, clearing an automatic qualifying height of 16'8 3/4" in the pole vault, one of four Cardinals to hit a national qualifying standard in the event.
John Wood finished runner-up, clearing a provisional qualifying height of 16'4 3/4" while
Thomas Stacey (16'0 3/4") and
Steven Stack (15'7") each met the provisional standard, finishing third and fourth respectively.
Robert Kapustka was a dual-winner in the throws, winning the weight throw with a provisional qualifying toss of 56'9 2/4" before claiming the shot put with a provisional qualifying heave of 51'10 1/2".
Matt Borchardt claimed the team's fourth event win in the field events, clearing 43'10 1/2" in the triple jump.
Three of North Central's 12 event wins came in the distance events, recording 1-2-3 finishes in the 800-meter, mile and 5,000-meter races.
Jon Biancardi claimed the 800, finishing in 1:58.85 while
Chris Kane captured the mile (4:23.77) and
Nathan Warstler raced to the 5K win (15:35.48).
Delaney Fluker won the 55-meter hurdles (8.12), helping the Cardinals secure the top four spots in the event while
Donald Smith and
Jon Caron claimed event wins in the 55-meter dash (6.73) and the 400-meter dash (51.09).
North Central relays would bookend the meet with victories, the distance medley relay squad of
Jacob Austin,
Dan Benton,
Alex Knobloch and
Kyle Brady opened the meet winning the event in 10:19.22 while the 4x400-meter relay team closed out the meet victorius as
Scott Foley,
Jon Biancardi,
Jon Caron and
Joe Schneiderbauer ran to a 3:28.13.
North Central returns to the track on Saturday, February 5, traveling up to Whitewater, Wis. for the Warhawk Classic.
