Apr. 28, 2009--
For second time this season, Sam Sweeney has been named College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Men's Tennis Player of the Week after concluding the week undefeated in singles play, extending his win streak to 10 matches.

The junior began the week on Thursday with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Dan Chang of Illinois Wesleyan to remain unbeaten in conference action while on Saturday, picked up the 6-1, 6-3, win against Mitch Eslick of Wartburg College (Iowa) and the 6-1, 7-6, victory against Claudio Giraldi of the University of Dubuque. Sweeney has now won his last 10 matches, boosting his season mark to a team-best 18-2, with both defeats coming at the hands of ranked opponents.

Playing at the No. 1 position, Sweeney and his partner Matt Boguslawski netted the team's lone doubles victory against the Titans on Thursday, edging out Dan Chang and Paul Ouhrlein 9-8. The duo also concluded Saturday with an 8-3 win over Dubuque's Claudio Giraldi and Cory McCarthy, helping the Cardinals pull out the 5-4 victory. The duo of Sweeney and Boguslawski are now 16-4 on the year, including an unblemished record against the CCIW.

It is the second time this season Sweeney has won the award and is the fourth time this year a Cardinal netter has won the award. Sweeney won the award for the week of February 17 after knocking off regionally-ranked Alex Lowe of UW-Whitewater while Boguslawski took home the honor the week of March 17 after the team's upset win over Augustana College and on April 7 after picking up wins over Lake Forest College and Aurora University.

The Cardinals (13-7, 2-2) return to the courts today, when they close out the regular season at Ranchview Park with a dual match against Wheaton College. Doubles matches are slated to begin at 4 p.m. with singles play to follow.
