Feb. 17, 2009 - The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin announced its men's tennis player of the week on Tuesday, with North Central College's Sam Sweeney (Jr., Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) winning the award after opening the season with a 2-0 mark in singles.

Sweeney opened up the season on January 30 with a convincing 6-1, 6-1 victory over MSOE's Juan Diego Montenegro in No. 1 singles. The following day against regionally-ranked UW-Whitewater, the junior recorded the 6-2, 6-2 victory over Alex Lowe, who entered the match ranked 11th in the Central Region in No. 1 singles.

In doubles, Sweeney and his partner Matt Boguslawski (Fr., Bloomingdale, Ill./Glenbard North) were simply dominant in their 8-1 win over MSOE's Montenegro and Mark Shadler in the opener before falling to UW-Whitewater's No. 1 squad of Danny Glinert and Erich Palecek in a tightly contested 8-6 match.

North Central (1-1) returns to the courts on Saturday, traveling to DePere, Wis. to face UW-La Crosse and host-Saint Norbert College. The Cardinals square off against the Eagles at 1:30 p.m. before facing the host Green Knights at 4:30 p.m. inside the Western Racquet and Fitness Club.
