Feb. 28, 2018 - While many know him for his basketball resume, North Central men's basketball player Alex Sorenson also played football and baseball as a kid. Once he went to high school, however, it was clear which sport he wanted to continue to play. "Basketball always stuck out to me because I was always tall. As I grew up it turned into the sport that I had the biggest passion for and I played it because I enjoyed it the most," Sorenson said.
Sorenson played his freshman collegiate season at Northern Michigan University and decided to transfer after his first season for many reasons. "I was a little far from home and the weather was tough, so I decided to transfer," said Sorenson. "Having my brother go to North Central played a big role in it for me. It was a school I knew and was familiar with, so I knew it was the right fit for me." His brother is Peter Sorensen ('16) who leads North Central's football program in career receiving touchdowns with 34.
To the Dunlap, Ill. native, family is very important . His brother Peter is one of his best friends and he also looks up to his dad as his role model. "He's a guy that works really hard to provide for my family. He is a great example of what I think a man and a father should be. He is a guy I've looked up to a lot in my life." Sorenson said.
On the basketball court, Sorenson has a record breaking career of his own. He had the most points in a single game (54) in North Central history on Dec. 30, 2017 against Robert Morris-Chicago and has shattered the total career blocks record with 145 in his three years as a Cardinal. Sorenson has also received Second Team All-Region accolades from D3hoops.com and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) in his first two seasons as a Cardinal.
This season, Sorenson is leading the Cardinals in points per game (18.7), rebounds per game (9.2), and blocks (32). He has started every game not only this season but in his North Central career and is a two-year captain.
In the classroom, Sorenson is a marketing major. Coming into college he was an accounting major but thought marketing was a better fit for him. "Marketing is a bit more personable and involves more human interaction which is something I think I am pretty good at," Sorenson said. He recently had an internship over the summer with Peoria Disposal Company as an accountant and enjoyed that experience.
As a senior, Sorenson is going to miss a lot of things about North Central. "I am definitely going to miss playing basketball. It's hard to believe that I am nearing the end of my career," said Sorenson.
In his free time, he enjoys playing video games such as Fortnite and watching movies, especially super hero movies. "I just saw Black Panther, I thought that was pretty awesome," Sorenson said. "I am also really excited for the new Avengers to come out."
As a kid, Sorenson wanted to be a professional basketball player, but now after he graduates, he has a different idea. "I want a job that I like and make enough money where I can live comfortably," Sorenson said. He also has looked into possibly playing basketball overseas in Europe for a season or two to keep his hand in the game.
Sorenson and the Cardinals' seasons are not yet over as North Central recieved an at-large bid and will play in the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament on Friday, March 2 at 5:30pm in Collegeville, Minn. A link to live stats and video can be found HERE.
