Swimmers Shine at Chicago Invite

CHICAGO (Jan. 14, 2012)-- The North Central College swimming team claimed two event winners over the weekend at the University of Chicago Invitational as the Cardinal women placed fifth and the men placed eighth.

On the women's side, Loreli Patschke prevailed in the 50-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 25.41 seconds. The sophomore additionally finished third in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.54) and eighth in the 100-yard butterfly (1:04.27).

Kelsey Truedson captured the Cardinals' second victory of the weekend, winning the 100-yard backstroke in 1:02.04 while finishing runner-up in the 200-yard backstroke (2:14.00).

Kelsey Tumpane recorded a pair of fifth places finishes, clocking a 1:03.79 in the 100-yard butterfly and a 2:20.62 in the 200-yard butterfly. Katie Stratton was fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke, touching the wall in 1:10.50.

Patschke, Truedson, Tumpane and Stratton combined to record a trio of top five finishes in the relays. The foursome place third in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:43.02), third in the 200-yard medley relay (1:55.08) and fifth in the 400-yard medley relay (4:13.92).

On the men's side Neil Hummer recorded a pair of top ten finishes, placing eighth in the 200-yard butterfly (2:09.21) and ninth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:12.32). Ross Artley was 13th in the 200-yard freestyle, stopping the clock in 1:53.95 while placing 15th in the 200-yard individual medley (2:15.37).

The Cardinals tallied 303.5 points in the women's standings to place fifth at the 11-team invitational. The host Maroons won the invite with 1,107 points followed by Calvin College (Mich.) with 878 points and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in third (410.5). On the men's side, North Central tallied 58 points, placing eighth of 10. Host Chicago won with 834.5 points while Calvin was second with 709 points while Lincoln College was third (685).

The Cardinals are idle until Saturday, Feb. 4, traveling to Wheaton College for a double dual with the host Thunder and Illinois Wesleyan University.
