BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (Sept. 19, 2011)-- The North Central College men's tennis squad opened up its fall schedule on Saturday, competing at the Illinois Wesleyan University Fall Tournament held at the Beadles-Morse Tennis Courts.
Rustam Saini highlighted the Cardinals' efforts in singles play, compiling a 2-1 mark at the tournament in the C flight. Saini opened the day with a, 6-2, 6-1, victory over IWU's Kevin Piotrowski before downing teammate
Adam Ciccone by a, 6-2, 6-4, count. Saini eventually bowed out with a, 6-3, 6-1, loss to Carthage College's Brian Howes.
Boris Kampel finished with a 1-1 mark in the B flight, defeating IWU's Aaron Guenther, 6-1, 6-3, in the opening round before stumbling, 6-1, 6-2, to Carthage's Nick Boomgarden.
Mason Sass also finished 1-1, falling, 7-5, 6-1, to Carthage's Andrew Knutson in the opening round of the C flight before taking down Wesleyan's Genyl Rufino, 7-6 (12), 6-1.
Will Exner was the lone Cardinal competing in the A flight of the tournament, suffering a pair of setbacks to players from Elmhurst College.
North Central returns to the courts on Thursday, Sept. 22 for day one of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region Tournament hosted by Washington University in Saint Louis.
